MotoGP 2024 now it has been held. Prima Pramac Racing racer, Jorge Martin, emerged as world champion.
He ended Francesco Bagnaia's series of world titles which he had won for two seasons.
Now with the completion of all the 2024 MotoGP race series, let's take another look at some of the unique facts that have happened throughout the season.
Race Canceled
Talking about the races that failed to take place, there are four races that will not be held this season.
First, the Argentine GP failed to be held because of the economic crisis that occurred in that country.
Second, the Indian GP also failed to be held, which will reportedly be postponed until next season.
Then there was the Kazakhstan GP whose schedule was postponed, but in the end it was not held due to flooding in Central Asia.
Flooding was also the reason why the Valencia GP was not held as the season finale, so the race had to be moved to Catalonia.
Anomaly Racer
Apart from Bagnaia (11 wins) and Jorge Martin (3 wins), there are only three other drivers who have won races this season.
First, there is Marc Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP) who also won three races: Aragon GP, San Marino GP and Australian GP.
Second, there is Bagnaia's teammate, Enea Bastianini, who has won the series twice: the British GP and the Emilia-Romagna GP. Finally, Maverick Vinales once won the first podium at the American GP.
Ducati is too domineering
This season, Ducati regained control and became factory world champions again.
This means that they have always been world champions for five consecutive seasons. Ducati's dominance makes the manufacturers' standings look too lopsided.
In the 20 series held, Ducati won 19 series. The only race they failed to become champions was at the American GP when Aprilia became champion through Maverick Vinales (Aprilia Racing).
In the final standings, Ducati collected 722 points. This number is very far behind the manufacturer in second place, KTM, which collected only 327 figures.
Jorge Martin Wins 3 Races
Jorge Martin may not dominate, but he managed to put in a stable performance. The racer from Spain was able to become the 2024 MotoGP world champion by collecting 508 points.
This number is 10 points ahead of the defending champion and closest competitor, Francesco Bagnaia.
In fact, if you look at the number of race wins, Jorge Martin is very far behind the competitor.
Bagnaia is recorded as winning 11 races out of 20 series held, aka more than half of the total series.
Meanwhile, Jorge Martin is recorded as having only won three races: the Portuguese GP, the French GP and the Indonesian GP.
However, his stable performance was able to make Jorge Martin continue to collect points and eventually become world champion.
Racing on the Same Circuit
There are two races taking place on the same circuit this season. First, there is the San Marino GP and the Emilia-Romagna GP which were held at the Misano Circuit on September 8 and 22.
This happened because the Kazakhstan GP was canceled, making this circuit host the race twice.
Second, the Catalunya Circuit was also used twice, for the Catalunya GP (26 May) and the final series of the season, the Solidarity GP (17 November).
The Solidarity GP was held here because the Valencia GP could not be held due to major flooding in Spain.
A Little Victory like the Nicky Hayden Era
If you look back, three race wins to become world champion were almost unheard of.
Joan Mir only won once to become world champion in 2020, but at that time the world was not fine due to the pandemic and only 14 race series were held.
A similar incident occurred in the 2006 season. That season, Nicky Hayden became world champion by only collecting two race wins throughout the season out of 17 series held.
Hayden is just five points ahead of Valentino Rossi in the drivers' standings at the end of the season.
The World Champion Team is Not World Champion
In fact, Jorge Martin's world title was unable to bring his team, Prima Pramac Racing, to become team world champions.
Prima Pramac Racing is only in second place with Jorge Martin and Franco Morbidelli taking their team to 681 points.
First place was filled by the Ducati Lenovo Team which collected 884 points. The Ducati Lenovo Team is filled by Francesco Bagnaia and Enea Bertianini this season.
